Yoniq Portal: PS2-Style Handheld Debuts at Gamescom 2026

Rather than adopting a standard rectangular layout, the Portal splits a PS2 gamepad down the middle and inserts the screen between the two control halves. The design remains faithful to 2000s PlayStation ergonomics, featuring dual analog thumbsticks, bulky shoulder bumpers, and classic button glyphs set into sculpted hand grips. The display is angled slightly toward the player to improve viewing angles during gaming sessions.

Flanking the screen, Yoniq added dedicated menu navigation buttons alongside Start and Select. Additional connectivity features include bottom-mounted charging ports, physical volume adjustments, and external storage expansion slots for local game media. While the device was shown alongside Yoniq’s Duo handheld, the Portal’s primary focus is on mid-2000s emulation capabilities, as demonstrated by on-site demos running World Soccer: Winning Eleven 8 (also known as Pro Evolution Soccer 4).

Software integration relies on PantasOS, Yoniq’s proprietary gaming-centered operating system. Early hands-on previews suggest PantasOS operates as a customized interface layer built over an Android core, aimed at centralizing launcher tools, emulator management, and cloud syncing services. Official promo material lists broad features such as "handheld optimized performance," "AI performance scheduling," and "cross-platform cloud connectivity," though specific technical details remain sparse.

It is notable that working, apparently production-ready units were displayed at the show, as prior to this, the company’s website only featured AI-generated concepts. Yoniq representatives report that they now have access to established manufacturing infrastructure in China. However, the company has not yet released exact processor specifications, memory options, battery capacity ratings, or official retail pricing. A launch countdown on the manufacturer's website points toward an early 2027 release.
