Valve’s Steam Frame Launches at $1,059 with a Half-Life: Alyx Bonus
Following its reveal alongside the new Steam Controller and Steam Machine, Valve has officially launched the Steam Frame standalone VR headset. To combat scalping and manage limited initial supply, the company is utilizing a preorder lottery system.
Technical Specs and the x86-on-Arm Vision
The most compelling aspect of the Steam Frame is its attempt to blur the lines between mobile and PC gaming. Despite being powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC—a chipset common in last-gen high-end Android phones—the headset is capable of running Windows games. This is driven by ongoing development of the FEX platform (FEX-Emu), a user-mode emulator that allows x86 and x86-64 applications to run on ARM64 Linux devices.
While the GPU horsepower of the SoC might limit performance in cutting-edge titles—particularly due to the lack of foveated rendering support—this architecture holds significant long-term potential for the Linux gaming ecosystem. Improving the x86-on-Arm experience could eventually transform how users interact with mobile-based hardware.

Pricing and Availability
The Steam Frame is available in two configurations: a 256GB kit priced at $1059 and a 1TB kit for $1299. To sweeten the deal, Valve is bundling Half-Life: Alyx with every purchase, a title that has been specifically optimized for the headset's hardware.
The preorder queue remains open until September 17th. Following this period, winners will be selected via a random lottery and notified via email to complete their purchase.
