AMD Ryzen 5 5500F beats 5500 non-F by up to 16% in first gaming benchmarks
First gaming benchmarks for the AMD Ryzen 5 5500F have surfaced, revealing that this budget-friendly AM4 CPU can outperform its sibling, the Ryzen 5 5500. According to tests conducted by RandomGaminginHD on YouTube, the new chip delivers a performance boost ranging from 3% to 16% depending on the title.
Architecture and Key Differences
While both processors feature six Zen 3 cores without integrated graphics, the Ryzen 5 5500F introduces significant architectural upgrades. Unlike the standard Ryzen 5 5500, which uses a monolithic design based on the Cezanne architecture and is limited to PCIe 3.0, the Ryzen 5 5500F utilizes a chiplet design based on Vermeer. This shift enables PCIe 4.0 support and a higher boost frequency of 4.4 GHz, compared to 4.2 GHz on the non-F model.
However, both chips are constrained by a relatively small 16MB of L3 cache. This stands in stark contrast to the more expensive Ryzen 5 5600X, which offers 32MB, and the 5800X3D, which features a massive 96MB cache designed specifically to bolster gaming performance and frame stability.
Benchmark Performance
In the testing environment, the Ryzen 5 5500F was paired with a mid-range AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB. The most significant jump in average frame rates was seen in Battlefield 6, where the 5500F was 16% faster, achieving 106 fps at 1080p. Other notable improvements include Cyberpunk 2077 (+10.9%), Counter-Strike 2 (+8%), and GTA V Enhanced (+8.8%).
In titles like Crimson Desert and Red Dead Redemption 2, the average FPS increase was more modest at 3.7%, though the 1% and 0.1% low metrics improved, leading to a smoother overall experience. Interestingly, no performance difference was observed in Forza Horizon 6.
Priced at approximately $99 (£88), the Ryzen 5 5500F serves as a viable entry-level option for DDR4-based systems, offering a path to PCIe 4.0 support without the need for a platform upgrade.
