Samsung’s Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra May Get a Major OLED Power-Up
It is looking increasingly likely that Samsung will deliver a significant display upgrade for its upcoming flagship lineup. According to South Korea’s ETNews, Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display have reportedly finalized plans to equip the future Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra with all-new "M16" OLED panels.
The Leap from M13 to M16
The shift to the M16 architecture represents a major advancement over the aging M13 material set used in several previous generations. By optimizing the underlying organic compounds, these new panels are expected to deliver substantial improvements in peak brightness, color rendition, and overall energy efficiency.
A key technical highlight is the integration of Color Filter-on-Encapsulation (COE) technology. Instead of using a traditional polarizing film layer, COE applies a micro-printed color filter directly onto the encapsulation substrate. This approach is designed to increase light transmittance while simultaneously reducing panel thickness and power draw.
Tiered Strategy and New Features
Samsung appears to be using the M16 setup as a way to widen the gap between its product tiers. While the standard Galaxy S27 and S27+ are expected to move to M14 panels (the same tech found in the S26 Ultra), the Pro and Ultra models will receive the premium M16 treatment. Additionally, high-end models may feature a Privacy Display, which dynamically limits viewing angles to protect sensitive on-screen information.
Interestingly, Samsung is already supplying M16 components to competitors, including Apple for the iPhone 18 Pro and Google for the Pixel 11 series. The technology is also expected to trickle down to the 2027 foldable lineup, including the Galaxy Z Fold 9 and Z Flip 9.
The Galaxy S27 series is slated for a Q1 2027 launch. This release is expected to introduce the new "Pro" moniker, which is rumored to be a slightly smaller, S Pen-free alternative to the Ultra model.
