Subnautica 2: New insights into story and world in Early Access 2.0
Unknown Worlds has released the first episode of a new video series, "The Journey to Early Access 2," offering a glimpse into the upcoming Early Access 2.0 update for Subnautica 2. The update is set to focus on expanding the lore of the colonists and the Axum, alongside introducing more dangerous elements to the underwater world.
Narrative and Environmental Storytelling
According to Creative Director Anthony Gallegos, a primary goal of the Early Access 2.0 update is to further develop the story of the colonists and the Axum. Players will encounter various "Points of Interest" tied to these groups. The narrative approach will remain non-linear, relying heavily on environmental storytelling, meaning players will need to piece together the story fragments found within the world themselves.
Dynamic Ecosystem and Leviathans
The new regions in Subnautica 2 will be closely linked to the Collector Leviathan. The developers stated that creatures in the game world will react to its presence, seeking refuge in deep trenches and underwater crevices. Anthony Gallegos suggested that this update will provide the kind of adventures that players "have been talking about for years."
Sales Success and Release Date
While an official release date for Early Access 2.0 has not yet been announced, the game's commercial performance has been significant. Following its launch in May 2026, Subnautica 2 saw massive sales; Alinea Analytics reports that the game sold 4 million copies in its first week of Early Access. This success follows a legal dispute involving former publisher Krafton, which resulted in the company paying Unknown Worlds a $250 million bonus.
