Music and Depth: How Rayman Legends Retold Doubles Down on the Original's Magic

Musical levels have always been the soul of the Rayman series. In the original Rayman Legends, these rhythm-action sequences turned platforming into a celebration of tracks like "Black Betty" or "Eye of the Tiger." For the upcoming Rayman Legends Retold, the developers aren't just preserving this tradition—they are expanding it, aiming for a full "dozen" musical stages.

In a recent interview, Ubisoft representatives—brand producer Loïc Gounon from Ubisoft Montpellier and animation and realization director Marco Renso from Ubisoft Milan—discussed the development of the remake. A primary concern was ensuring the transition from pure 2D to 2.5D wouldn't break the magic of the original. Renso described the creation of new musical levels as a conducting experience, where every asset, beat, and animation must align to create a perfect rhythmic flow.

One of the most significant additions in Rayman Legends Retold is the increase in musical content. While the original featured six iconic tracks, the remake will feature twelve. Currently, two new tracks have been confirmed: one inspired by the "Macarena" (featuring a luchador boss performing the dance) and another based on MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This." The team aims to select the remaining tracks to ensure the soundtrack appeals to both children and their parents, making the experience transgenerational.

Technically, the gameplay is designed to feel identical to the source material. Gounon explained the engine architecture using a "Russian doll" analogy: the original UbiArt Framework, which handles physics and mechanics, runs within a new engine responsible for modern rendering and audio. This approach preserves the precise controls players love while providing enhanced visuals. The move to 2.5D also allows for more cinematic moments; for instance, zip-line sequences can trigger camera shifts that let players soak in the lush, detailed backgrounds during brief gameplay pauses.

Regarding difficulty, Ubisoft is aiming for a balanced experience. Gounon noted that while the game retains the series' signature "die-and-retry" DNA, it isn't a hyper-casual title nor a hardcore Metroidvania. The goal is to attract players who enjoy a challenge while remaining accessible for families to play together.

Rayman Legends Retold is scheduled for release on December 3, 2026, for PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2. The release was recently moved from October to December to allow the teams more time to polish every detail.
