Overwatch BlizzCon Reveals: New Hero Doctrine and Major Reworks
At the recent BlizzCon, Blizzard Entertainment unveiled a massive roadmap for Overwatch 2, focusing on community celebration and significant shifts in the game's roster and narrative. The announcements range from the introduction of a new Support Hero to major role reworks and a glimpse into the long-term future of the franchise.
New Hero and Narrative Shifts
The standout reveal is Doctrine, a vampire-inspired Support Hero and ally of Doomfist. Players can currently participate in a limited-time Hero Trial to get hands-on experience with his kit, which utilizes a scepter, infusions, and bat-like drones to manipulate lifeforce. Doctrine is scheduled for his official debut in Season 5, which will also mark the conclusion of the Reign of Talon story arc. Following this narrative milestone, Blizzard Entertainment teased a clue regarding Hero 55, hinting at the direction of the game heading into 2027.
Map and Hero Reworks
A new Escort map, Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, was introduced. Set in a remote Icelandic volcano prison, the map serves as the backdrop for the reconnection between Doomfist and Doctrine. Alongside the new environment, Season 5 will bring significant mechanical changes to existing characters. Notably, Sombra will undergo a major rework, transitioning from the Damage role to the Support role. Roadhog is also slated for a major rework to improve his gameplay experience.
Community Events and Collaborations
The BlizzCon festivities include several high-profile collaborations and competitive events. The Overwatch World Cup will reach its climax during the event, featuring the top eight teams competing live. Musical performances are also scheduled, including a set by YOASOBI during the Overwatch World Cup Day 2 and a closing ceremony appearance by LE SSERAFIM. Additionally, the Dokiwatch collaboration will continue with a new LE SSERAFIM encore.
In a unique crossover, QuestWatch will bring Overwatch to the tabletop format. This live TTRPG one-shot features Matt Mercer as Game Master Cassidy, guiding a party including Sombra (voiced by Carolina Ravassa), Symmetra (voiced by Anjali Bhimani), Reinhardt (voiced by Darin DePaul), and Vendetta (voiced by Chiara Preziosi) through a non-canon adventure. The event will conclude with an online charity auction for Make-A-Wish.
Mythic Gift and Future Roadmap
To thank the community, Blizzard Entertainment is offering a Mythic Gift. Players who play at least one game after the Opening Ceremony can earn a Mythic Voucher. This voucher allows players to select one complete Mythic bundle from Seasons 1-14 in the Mythic Shop. The voucher includes the base Mythic Skin and all standard customization levels, though Aspects are excluded. Players who already own all eligible base Mythic Skins will receive 50 Mythic Prisms instead. The window to earn and redeem the voucher runs from September 12 until October 5.
Looking further ahead, Overwatch Spotlight is scheduled to return in February 2027 to provide a roadmap for the upcoming year. Season 5 is set to launch on October 6.
