NvpwrControl expands RTX 50 Laptop GPU support
The experimental NvpwrControl utility has received a significant update, expanding its compatibility to the entire GeForce RTX 50 mobile lineup. The tool now targets everything from RTX 5050 to RTX 5090 Laptop GPUs.
User-mode implementation: no more custom drivers
The most significant change in version 2.3.0 is the shift to a user-mode implementation for TGP (Total Graphics Power) control. This eliminates the need for the custom unsigned kernel driver used in previous versions. Consequently, the setup process is much simpler: users no longer need to run the application as an administrator or temporarily disable Windows driver signature enforcement.
While the compatibility list has grown, the developer noted that the current build has only been fully validated on a Lenovo Legion Pro 5 equipped with an RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU. Actual compatibility remains dependent on the laptop manufacturer, VBIOS, subsystem ID, and the specific NVIDIA driver version.
Features and safety warnings
In addition to power limit adjustments, the utility continues to provide:
- GPU core and memory clock tuning;
- system telemetry;
- automatic GPU and VBIOS detection.
As NvpwrControl remains in beta, users should exercise caution. Increasing power limits can lead to higher power consumption and increased temperatures, placing additional stress on the laptop's cooling and power delivery systems. For those seeking safer tuning options, the developer recommends using the official tools integrated into the NVIDIA App.
