Nvidia GeForce driver 616.56 causes screen flickering
Nvidia has acknowledged a screen flickering issue in the latest "GeForce" Game Ready driver, version 616.56, and is working on a fix. While the company plans to resolve the problem in a future update, users can apply temporary workarounds or roll back to a previous driver version.
Reports of flickering and discoloration have flooded the official feedback thread for driver 616.56. Nvidia staffer Manuel@Nvidia confirmed that the company is "testing a fix for this." Unlike previous problematic releases where hotfixes were issued, this time the patch will be deployed via a subsequent driver update.
The next driver release is scheduled for September 3 to coincide with the launch of DLSS 5. However, because the code for that release was finalized a week earlier, it will not include the flickering fix. Users should expect the patch to arrive on September 10 at the earliest.
For those experiencing the issue, two workarounds have proven effective. Switching to 10-bit color via the Nvidia app can circumvent the flickering. Alternatively, enabling Windows Automatic Colour Management (ACM) appears to resolve the problem similarly. If you are unsure whether your monitor supports 10-bit signals, the ACM route is generally the safer option.
If you are not playing one of the specific titles affected by this driver—Doom: The Dark Ages, Hell Let Loose: Vietnam, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, or Star Wars Zero Company—rolling back to version 610.88 is a viable option. You can do this via the Drivers tab in the Nvidia app or by manually downloading the prior version.
Concerns about losing access to Nvidia DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction due to a rollback are unfounded. As long as you are running a driver at least as new as version 580.88, you will retain access to the latest ray tracing denoiser.
