NVIDIA adds DLSS 4.5 override controls to GeForce NOW
The GeForce NOW cloud gaming service has introduced granular control over DLSS 4.5 technologies. Users can now manually override settings for upscaling, ray reconstruction, and frame generation, bringing the cloud experience closer to the level of customization available on a local RTX-powered PC.
Enhanced options for subscribers
The update allows users to manually select preferred algorithms for DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and frame generation. This provides more precise control over the trade-off between visual fidelity and performance than the previous automated approach.
Feature access remains tied to subscription tiers. Similar to local hardware limitations, Ray Reconstruction and frame generation are exclusive to Performance and Ultimate members (utilizing RTX 4080 and RTX 5080-based hardware). Ultimate tier subscribers, specifically those on the RTX 5080 platform, gain access to 4x dynamic multi-frame generation, which allows them to target a specific frame rate.
Notably, NVIDIA has opted not to implement 5x or 6x dynamic frame generation for the streaming service. According to the company, internal testing indicated that these higher multipliers offer no tangible benefit for players in a streaming environment.
Technical limitations and compatibility
There are several technical caveats to keep in mind. The DLSS override status is only visible during active gameplay; it will appear as Off in game menus, cutscenes, or any segments where DLSS is not utilized. Additionally, frame generation may appear inactive if the current streaming framerate is already sufficiently high.
Users cannot activate overrides for both Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction simultaneously. Currently, games such as 007 First Light (with path tracing support), Control Resonant, and Resident Evil Requiem are among those that support these override features.
To ensure the smoothest experience, NVIDIA recommends using a monitor with G-Sync or VRR support, configuring a Custom Streaming mode (90+ FPS, Adaptive VSync, Reflex On), and selecting titles that support Nvidia Reflex and DLSS frame generation.
