MSI brings DDR4 back to gaming laptops amidst DRAM crisis — Katana 15 HX C14 available with up to Core i9-14900HX
MSI introduces the new Katana 15 HX C14, a gaming laptop that stands out in a market dominated by DDR5 memory by offering support for both DDR4 and DDR5. This move comes as part of a strategic response to the ongoing DRAM crisis, which has driven up component costs and made entry-level gaming laptops increasingly expensive.
The Katana 15 HX C14 is designed with flexibility in mind, featuring dual SO-DIMM slots that allow users to choose between DDR4 or DDR5 memory depending on their budget and performance needs. This configurability is a significant departure from the trend where manufacturers are pushing exclusively for DDR5, even in entry-level models.
For those opting for DDR4, the laptop supports up to 96GB of capacity, though MSI did not specify the standard configuration. In contrast, DDR5 kits can reach higher speeds, such as 6000MHz, but come at a premium price. A 32GB DDR4-3200 kit costs around $200, while a comparable DDR5-6000 kit exceeds $400, highlighting the cost savings available with the older memory standard.
Under the hood, the Katana 15 HX C14 is powered by Intel's 14th-gen Raptor Lake Refresh processors. The top-tier configuration features the Intel Core i9-14900HX, a 24-core processor that delivers robust performance for demanding tasks and gaming. This CPU is paired with an Nvidia RTX 5070 laptop GPU, which supports the latest AI features, GDDR7 memory, DLSS 4.5, and real-time ray tracing.
MSI claims that the Katana 15 HX C14 is tuned for up to 170W of combined CPU and GPU power. The cooling system, equipped with dual fans, three heat pipes, and four exhaust outlets, is designed to sustain this performance without overheating. Additionally, the laptop includes dual-PCIe Gen 4x4 M.2 slots, allowing gamers to add a separate SSD dedicated to their gaming library.
Display options include a 15.6-inch IPS panel available with either QHD (2560x1440) resolution supporting up to a 165 Hz refresh rate or FHD (1900x1080) resolution with up to a 144 Hz refresh rate. The chassis measures 22.9mm in thickness and weighs 4.62 pounds, making it fairly compact for a 15-inch gaming notebook.
Other notable features include support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4, a 4-Zone RGB gaming keyboard with 1.7mm key travel, a 240W power adapter, USB Type-C with Power Delivery 3.0, a 60Whr battery, and DTS-enhanced dual 2W speakers.
The Katana 15 HX C14 will be available globally, although pricing information is not yet confirmed. The laptop's design features a stealthy black finish with textured slash patterns inspired by traditional Japanese blades along with bright red logos.
This release marks a significant shift in the gaming laptop market, where manufacturers are increasingly moving away from DDR4 due to its perceived obsolescence.
