Mercedes and NVIDIA Aim for Level 4 Autonomy Within the Next Decade

Mercedes-Benz and NVIDIA have announced an expanded collaboration aimed at developing next-generation driver assistance systems. The goal is to pave the way for SAE Level 4 autonomy—where the vehicle can handle all driving tasks under specific conditions—within the next decade.

A Deeply Integrated Software Stack

The partnership moves beyond simple hardware supply to a comprehensive integration of MB.OS, Mercedes' proprietary operating system, with NVIDIA's technology. The Hyperion platform will serve as the backbone, providing the necessary computing and sensor architecture. Complementing this is the Alpamayo stack, which utilizes AI-driven reasoning capabilities to support urban point-to-point assistance, active safety, and automated parking.

To meet the rigorous safety requirements of higher autonomy, Mercedes will implement Halos. This secondary safety stack is designed to provide redundancy and additional protection layers alongside the existing Mercedes safety architecture.

Shifting Focus from Drive Pilot

This long-term roadmap comes as Mercedes shifts its immediate product strategy. The Drive Pilot system, which made history in 2021 as the first internationally certified Level 3 system, is being phased out of the lineup. While the German KBA recently approved an upgraded version capable of speeds up to 95 km/h (slated for a 2025 rollout), the system will notably be absent from the 2026 S-Class refresh. This suggests a strategic pivot from current driver assistance toward the more advanced autonomous capabilities promised by the NVIDIA partnership.

The collaboration, which began in 2020, has already seen NVIDIA's influence in features like MB. Drive Assist Pro (Level 2++). The new agreement also extends into the factory; NVIDIA's technology will be integrated into the MO360 production ecosystem to enhance simulation, flexibility, and quality across Mercedes' global manufacturing network.
