Marvel's Wolverine — State of Play Impressions: Brutal, Beautiful and PS5-Exclusive Forever
State of Play June 2, 2026 opened with an extended Marvel's Wolverine gameplay reveal. Insomniac Games finally showed the game in motion — and the editorial team's impressions are overwhelmingly positive.
Marvel's Wolverine is a standalone action game from Insomniac Games, creators of Spider-Man. It is not a continuation of any Spider-Man game — it's a self-contained story about James 'Logan' Howlett with an original narrative and its own tone.
Combat: Brutality Without Compromise
Wolverine is a berserker. Insomniac didn't soften this. Claws, brutal takedowns, rage — all of it is central to the combat system. The gameplay feels reminiscent of God of War 2018, but with a more aggressive and continuous attack style.
Wolverine has health regeneration and visibly bears wounds even during combat — a visual element reinforcing the character's identity. A berserker mechanic provides temporary power boosts when taking damage.
Story: Original and Emotional
Insomniac emphasized this is a standalone story, not connected to Marvel's Spider-Man. Logan finds himself in a situation touching both his past and his current struggle. The trailer showed an emotional scene with a new character — presumably a key ally.
PS5 Exclusive Forever
The biggest news isn't gameplay. PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst confirmed: Marvel's Wolverine stays on PS5 permanently. No PC port — unlike Horizon, Spider-Man, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima.
A bold decision in a growing PC market. Sony may want to make PS5 irreplaceable for certain types of content.

Release date: September 15, 2026. Pre-orders are now open. The standard edition price hasn't been officially announced, but flagship PS5 pricing of ~$69.99 is expected.
