Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2 — Review: A Classic on New Platforms

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth — one of the best JRPGs of recent years — arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S on June 3, 2026, at an attractive $49.99 price point. This is the game's first release outside PlayStation.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth earned outstanding critical scores when it launched on PS5 in 2024. Its expansive open world, deep combat system, and emotionally charged story made it one of the defining JRPGs of the generation. Now it leaves PlayStation for the first time.

Nintendo Switch 2: A Remarkable Port

Porting Rebirth to Switch 2 was technically demanding — the game's large open zones with detailed environments, complex lighting, and numerous NPCs required serious optimization. Square Enix delivered: the game runs smoothly in both docked and portable modes.

Portable mode resolution is lower than PS5, but the image remains readable and attractive. The open zones of the Grasslands and Junon look solid even on Switch 2's screen.

Xbox Series X|S: Finally on Microsoft Consoles

The Xbox version performs at a level close to the PS5 edition. Xbox Play Anywhere means one purchase grants access on both console and PC via Xbox. Xbox Cloud Gaming is also supported.

New Mode: Streamlined Progression

Square Enix added a simplified progression mode for new players — no HP/MP loss, no Limit/ATB gauge restrictions, damage simplified. It lets players fully immerse in the story without fear of getting stuck on a boss.

Switch 2 Physical Edition with MTG Card

The limited physical Switch 2 edition comes with an exclusive Magic: The Gathering card featuring Zack Fair art by Tetsuya Nomura — a strong incentive for collectors.

Verdict

Both versions are quality ports of one of the best JRPGs of recent years. If you missed Rebirth on PS5 — now is the perfect time. The Switch 2 version is especially valuable for portable play. Xbox Play Anywhere makes the Xbox version maximally flexible.
