Marathon: Full Reset and Symbiosis Update Delayed to December
Bungie is making significant shifts in the development roadmap for Marathon. The studio is moving away from its current seasonal model in favor of a more flexible content delivery schedule, while also announcing a complete reset of player progress and the in-game economy.
The major update originally slated for September 22 has been cancelled. Bungie stated that the delay is necessary to incorporate player feedback into the development process. In its place, a smaller but fundamental update is scheduled for October 6. This update will implement a full reset of player progression and the in-game economy to address balancing issues encountered during Season 2, where veteran players reached the endgame significantly faster than intended, creating a gap that made it difficult for newcomers to compete.

Following the reset, all players will restart under adjusted conditions. This transition will also include several quality-of-life improvements, a new battle pass, and the limited-time return of the Vault Breaker event mode.

The much-anticipated Symbiosis expansion, previously expected in September, is now scheduled for release on December 8. This update aims to create a more dynamic survival experience. A major highlight will be the introduction of the first permanent PvE mode, supplementing the existing PvPvE extraction concept. This move is a direct response to player criticism regarding the frustration and lack of variety in the current competitive-focused loop.

Marathon launched on March 5, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The title remains a high-priority project for Bungie following Sony's $3.6 billion acquisition of the studio in 2022, especially as active development on Destiny 2 has concluded.
