Kioxia Exceria Pro G2 NVMe SSD review: reliable but not a leader

Reviewing solid state drives (SSDs) in recent years feels like fighting ghosts: often you get a device with different NAND or controller than advertised, while prices fluctuate wildly. However, Kioxia decided to take a bold step and launch a consumer product in the middle of a NAND "drought", providing reviewers with samples for critique. We received the Kioxia Exceria Pro G2 NVMe SSD and are ready to share our findings.

Specs and Hardware

The drive is built around Silicon Motion's SM2508 8-channel controller. This is the same chip found in legendary WD Black SN8100 (formerly SanDisk) and Kingston Fury Renegade G5. Memory is provided by Kioxia's own 219-layer BiCS8 TLC NAND. It includes 2GB of LPDDR4X, with a rated endurance of 1200 TBW.

The drive features a single-sided M.2-2280 form factor. Rated performance is up to 14,900 MB/s sequential read and 13,400 MB/s sequential write. The launch price was around £350 in the UK, though the unit is now out of stock almost everywhere.
