Keychron K8 Ultra 8K review: Solid, dependable and versatile
Keychron has carved out a wonderful niche in the overcrowded mechanical keyboard market by offering fantastic all-round keyboards with robust features at an affordable price. The new Keychron K8 Ultra 8K follows the established formula: a hefty aluminium top case, durable PBT keycaps, and versatile connectivity. At 1.299 kg (2.86 lbs), it is a sturdy device that feels built to last.
Build and Ergonomics
The TKL layout chops off the number pad to save desk space without sacrificing functionality. Narrow bezels make this model slightly smaller than other TKL keyboards we've tested. While the top case is machined aluminium, the underside features a doubleshot ABS portion mated to an aluminium top piece. This is a minor nitpick; the frame remains fantastically sturdy.

The keyboard uses doubleshot PBT keycaps with an OSA profile, which provides a more spherical top edge for better finger placement. Inside, sound dampening foam and materials contribute to a pleasant acoustic profile, though the metal case does add some resonance, making the sound quite loud and high-pitched without any rattling.
Connectivity and Battery Life
A standout feature is support for an 8000 Hz polling rate over both USB-C wired and 2.4 GHz wireless connections. While it lacks advanced gaming features like TMR or rapid trigger, the high polling rate ensures low latency. The USB-C port is located on the left side for charging and wired use, alongside a switch for Bluetooth/2.4 GHz and Windows/macOS modes.

Battery life is impressive, thanks to the new ZMK firmware designed specifically for wireless connectivity. With RGB off, runtime reaches up to 760 hours; at the lowest lighting level, it drops to 225 hours. This is a significant improvement over older Keychron models using QMK, where battery drain was more noticeable.
Software and Configuration
The keyboard supports Keychron's new web-based Launcher software for configuring macros, key remapping, and RGB lighting presets (22 options available). The interface is lightweight and convenient to use.

Switches: The Main Caveat
We tested the unit with "Brown" Apex switches, which feature a box stem design to reduce wobble. However, in our experience, they still exhibit some wobble. The switches have a 50 g force and 4 mm travel. While there is a tactile bump, it feels slightly too soft and less noticeable than we would prefer. For comparison, the linear Red switches have 45 g force, while the Banana switches offer 55 g force with a shorter 3.6 mm travel and a sharper mid-travel bump.

Clones of MX-style switches can be inconsistent in feel. In this case, the Brown switches felt on the wrong side of subtle: there is a bump, but it's not as pronounced as desired. The good news is that the keyboard is hot-swappable, allowing users to replace the switches with other 3- or 5-pin options easily.
Verdict
The Keychron K8 Ultra 8K is a fantastic mechanical keyboard for most folks. It offers a durable build, versatile connectivity, and dependable features at a competitive price of $120. It serves as a pleasant halfway house between budget options and premium gear like the Ducky Zero or Asus ROG Strix Scope II 96 Wireless.

The only drawback is the slightly inconsistent feel of the Brown switches if you opt for that variant. If switch consistency is critical, consider swapping them out or choosing the Banana version for a heavier tactile bump. Overall, it is solid, dependable, and versatile.
