GIGABYTE introduces new B550 X motherboards for AMD's aging AM4 platform
GIGABYTE has announced a new B550 X motherboard series for AMD Ryzen processors using the AM4 socket, featuring Wi-Fi 7 support and improved power delivery.
GIGABYTE has unveiled a new B550 X motherboard series designed for the AM4 platform, which debuted in 2016. Although the platform was succeeded by AM5 with the Ryzen 7000 series in 2022, the manufacturer reports continued demand for new hardware on this interface.
The B550 X lineup includes Gaming, Eagle, and AORUS Elite models available in ATX and Micro-ATX form factors. GIGABYTE has not yet disclosed the complete model list, pricing, or release dates, noting that the boards will reach the market in stages.
A key focus of the new series is support for the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D. The boards are engineered around this eight-core Zen 3 processor, which includes 96MB of L3 cache. Power delivery utilizes a 10-phase design with 60A DrMOS components. GIGABYTE claims this configuration can run up to 20°C cooler than boards using standard PowerPAK components. Cooling solutions include larger VRM heatsinks, 5 W/mK thermal pads, M.2 heatsinks, and a full-coverage rear base plate.
Despite using the older B550 chipset and DDR4 memory, the B550 X series adds Wi-Fi 7 support with 160 MHz channels, 4K-QAM, and Multi-Link Operation. Other features include screwless M.2 installation, removable M.2 heatsinks, and a PCIe release mechanism for removing large graphics cards.
The announcement indicates that GIGABYTE sees demand for new AM4 hardware several years after AMD moved to AM5. The boards may target users upgrading existing DDR4 systems or building lower-cost gaming PCs around discounted Ryzen 5000 processors. Previously, ASRock announced a similar motherboard for the AM4 platform.
