Framework Laptop 12 Gets Core Series 3: Thunderbolt 4, Wi-Fi 7 and Fedora Out of the Box

Framework has unveiled an updated version of its 12-inch convertible Framework Laptop 12. The main changes involve the platform: instead of Intel Core 13th Gen processors, the new model uses chips from the Intel Core Series 3, built on the Intel 18A architecture. It also comes with Wi-Fi 7 modules, Thunderbolt 4 ports, and a pre-installed Fedora 44 KDE Plasma.

What Changed Inside?

The new Intel Core Series 3 platform is described as a smaller variant of the Core Ultra lineup. It features Cougar Cove and Darkmont LP-E cores, along with Xe3 graphics. The laptop can be configured with Core 3, Core 5, or Core 7 processors. DDR5 memory now operates at 6400 MHz with a maximum capacity of up to 64 GB (in a single SO-DIMM slot).

A significant update is the interfaces: rear ports now support Thunderbolt 4, enabling external GPU connections or dual 4K displays. The front panel features two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports. The built-in Wi-Fi module uses an Intel BE213 chip with Wi-Fi 7 R2 support.

Video playback performance has increased significantly: the company claims that when watching 4K content (e.g., Netflix), battery life has improved by approximately 70% compared to the previous version. However, it is important to note that these are manufacturer figures from early tests and have not been confirmed by independent measurements.

Linux and Fedora

Framework paid special attention to Linux support: about 80% of current laptop owners use this OS. The model is now available with Fedora 44 KDE Plasma pre-installed. For the new platform to work correctly, a Linux kernel version 7.1 or newer is required. Support for the new fingerprint scanner is already integrated into the libfprint library.

Compatibility and Upgrades

The key feature of Framework is the ability to upgrade older devices. New motherboards, backlit keyboards, and fingerprint scanners are compatible with the original Laptop 12 model. This allows users to upgrade their device in parts without a full replacement.

Pricing and Availability

The version with pre-installed Fedora starts at $699 in the US. The base DIY model (without OS) remains available from $499. First shipments are expected in October 2026.
