Everything we've learned about Diablo 5 since its BlizzCon 2026 reveal

The BlizzCon 2026 reveal took many by surprise: instead of the anticipated expansion for Diablo 4, Blizzard unveiled Diablo 5. Although a spring 2029 release is still years away, the information shared suggests that this new entry will be significantly more complex and expansive than its predecessor.

The game is set a century after the events of Diablo 4 in a version of Sanctuary that has completely succumbed to evil. Diablo, the Lord of Terror, has already conquered the world, shifting his role from a final boss to a constant, looming threat. Rather than sprawling open continents, players will navigate a more compact Western continent via a caravan that grows in size as more allies join the journey.

A major highlight is the involvement of narrative director Jennifer Hepler (a BioWare veteran known for her work on Dragon Age). Her influence aims to bring deep RPG storytelling to the series. The caravan will function as a roving campsite, similar to those in Baldur's Gate, where companions act as vendors and quest-givers. These companions will feature personal stories of survival, including a unique take on the Treasure Goblin, who is described as searching for meaning in a world where greed has lost its purpose.

Gameplay-wise, Diablo 5 returns to its roots, borrowing mechanics from Diablo 2 and Diablo 3:

  • Procedural Generation: The landscape, points of interest, and roaming monsters will change each time you visit, mirroring the dungeon mechanics of Diablo 3.
  • Classes: Demon Hunter and Monk are returning. A completely new class, the Plague Knight, will be a heavily-armored fighter that spreads and consumes disease.
  • Itemization: The return of Runes, Runewords, and gear sets has been confirmed.
  • Inventory Management: The game is experimenting with bringing back stat requirements, item tiers, and larger item sizes that take up more space in the inventory.

The approach to multiplayer remains less clear. While Diablo 5 supports solo and co-op play, Blizzard has not yet confirmed if it will feature a shared world like Diablo 4 or a fundamentally online experience. As for combat, the team claims to have ideas to make it feel even more visceral and action-forward, though specific details remain under wraps.

The relatively short six-year gap between Diablo 4 and Diablo 5 has sparked concerns among fans regarding the future of Diablo 4 expansions. However, the scale of the changes presented suggests a much more involved and deep experience for the series.
