Alien Deathstorm's intense, relentless FPS action was a surprise Gamescom highlight
One of the most striking demos at Gamescom was Alien Deathstorm. Developed and published by Rebellion, this sci-fi horror FPS stands out for its relentless, overwhelming intensity and a gameplay loop centered on pure, chaotic dynamism.
The premise follows a Combat Engineer dispatched to a remote off-world colony to investigate why communication has ceased. The cause is a combination of extraterrestrial threats and a cataclysmic deathstorm ravaging the environment.
The gameplay of Alien Deathstorm eschews slow-burn tension in favor of immediate, high-stakes action. After a brief period to acclimatize, players are swarmed by enemies from all sides—ranging from small, skittering creatures that leap at the player's face to hulking, predator-like threats. Survival necessitates constant movement and momentum; players must navigate labyrinthine outposts, manage resources like medical injectors and grenades, and use terminals to upgrade weapons such as pistols, shotguns, and SMGs.
The atmosphere is heavily driven by environmental storytelling and sensory overload. Torrential rain, swirling sand, flickering industrial lights, and the constant mechanical hum of failing machinery create a moody, claustrophobic setting. Navigating through these environments is a challenge in itself, as the layout is designed to be disorienting, forcing players to balance combat with orientation.
While the demo showcased a punishingly difficult experience characterized by rapid-fire combat and frequent deaths, Rebellion representatives confirmed that an easy mode will be included in the full release to accommodate different playstyles.
Alien Deathstorm is slated for a spring 2027 release on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Game Pass.
