Driving Is Hard: How a Coffee-Break Joke Became a Bathtub Rage Game

Elegant Horse Studios has released Driving Is Hard, a unique racing title that began as an office joke and evolved into a full-fledged game available on Xbox. The project features physics-based gameplay centered around piloting a bathtub with a semi-nude protagonist named Jeff.

The concept originated from a conversation between co-founders Laurynas Jatužis and Liudas (Hangeris) near an office coffee machine. Inspired by the punishing "Foddian" genre, Hangeris proposed a standalone racing game controlled solely with a mouse. While the initial prototype using a mouse was deemed too unintuitive, the team quickly pivoted to traditional arcade-style controls.

Visually, the team settled on a buggy design that eventually transformed into a bathtub on wheels. The open suspension of the vehicle paired perfectly with the off-road terrain. The protagonist, Jeff, is a bald man who navigates this unique vehicle through seven distinct worlds. His name was suggested by a colleague from the horror studio Baisu.

Players can choose between three difficulty levels: "Driving is Easy" for a relaxed experience with checkpoints, the original "Driving is Hard," and "Driving is Insane." The game also features customizable bathtub skins and collectible soaps.

Driving Is Hard is now available on Xbox with Xbox Play Anywhere support, allowing owners to play on both console and PC. The title is priced at $9.99.
