Discord CTO confirms desktop and mobile apps are being rebuilt in Rust

Discord is rebuilding its entire application suite in the Rust programming language, moving away from Electron on desktop and React Native on mobile. This was confirmed by Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Stanislav Vishnevskiy.

In a post on X, Vishnevskiy stated that the goal is to bring the entire client to Rust. While the mobile app will maintain its native interface, it will share core application code with the desktop version via Rust. Discord aims to begin user testing for the new client "soon™," though no official release date has been announced by the company.

The new client will be built using the GPUI framework, rather than Tauri as previously speculated. A Windows Task Manager screenshot shared by Vishnevskiy showed a process named 'Discord Phoenix' utilizing 290.2 MB of memory; the CTO clarified that the screenshot depicted two accounts running simultaneously, a feature the new app will support. While the app will look and function identically to the current version, it will be native, utilizing the system webview only for specific integrations like YouTube or Activities. The company expects the transition to result in better performance.

Discord has been integrating Rust into its ecosystem since 2018. The language already powers much of the company's infrastructure, voice technology, and parts of the existing client. Previously, Discord migrated its Read States service to Rust to eliminate latency spikes and utilized the language for its game SDK and video encoding in Go Live.

Regarding mobile development, the iOS app originally utilized React Native, and the Android app was migrated to the framework a couple of years ago to ensure feature parity with the desktop version.
