BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony: Starcraft Returns, Diablo V Announced, Warcraft news and more
Blizzard Entertainment has unveiled a massive roadmap during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony, featuring major announcements for its core franchises. From the return of a legendary sci-fi IP in a new genre to the next chapter of the Diablo saga and significant expansions to the Warcraft universe, the event highlighted the future of the studio's most iconic titles.
StarCraft: A New Direction
In one of the most unexpected reveals of the event, StarCraft is set to return in 2030. Moving away from its traditional real-time strategy roots, the new installment will be an original open-world shooter.
Diablo: The Fall of Sanctuary
The Diablo franchise is celebrating its 30th anniversary with several major updates. Diablo V has been officially announced for a Spring 2029 release. The narrative will shift to a darker premise where Sanctuary has fallen and Diablo has emerged victorious.
In the immediate term, Diablo IV will launch its 'Season of Hell’s Legacy' on September 15, marking the series' anniversary with the return of the Prime Evils, including the Lord of Terror, alongside Deckard Cain and new Nightmare Rifts. Additionally, a new Amazon class is scheduled to arrive in the first half of 2027, and a new boss encounter featuring Mephisto is being introduced.
Beyond gaming, Blizzard confirmed that an animated series set in the Diablo universe is currently in development with Netflix.
Overwatch: A Decade of Combat
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Overwatch is moving into its next era. Season 5 will introduce a new Support Hero named Doctrine, a vampire-inspired healer. The update also includes significant reworks for Sombra and Roadhog, as well as a new map, Watchpoint: Grimsvotn. This season will conclude the 'Reign of Talon' story arc, with the next major Spotlight event scheduled for February 2027.
Warcraft: Expanding the Saga
The Warcraft universe is seeing simultaneous expansions of its past and future. Within World of Warcraft, the 'The Worldsoul Saga' continues with the 12.2 update, 'Eclipse', featuring Xal’atath. The studio also provided a glimpse of 'The Last Titan', the final chapter of the current saga.
In a surprise move, Warcraft III: Reforged is receiving a new story campaign titled 'The Forsaken Kingdom', focusing on the fall of Lordaeron. This update, part of version 3.0, includes a substantial graphics overhaul and a revamped World Editor. Furthermore, World of Warcraft: Forever—a third way to play set in the Vanilla era—is launching on November 4, 2026, featuring three new zones, over 1,000 new quests, nine new dungeons, two new raids, and the new Skyborne race. Beta testing for this mode begins on September 17.
Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm
Hearthstone is introducing an overhauled Journal to track quests and achievements through expansion storylines. The 'Reign of the Black Empire' expansion arrives on October 20, introducing the 'Assemble' keyword. Additionally, a new Monk class is expected in March 2027. Meanwhile, Heroes of the Storm will welcome Xal’atath as a playable hero on September 28, following her appearance on the PTR on September 14.
