Amazon Replaces Fire OS with Android in New Alexa Tablet Lineup
In a major strategic pivot, Amazon is moving away from its custom Fire OS for its latest tablet refresh, opting instead to lean heavily into the Alexa brand. The new Alexa Tablet lineup will run a full, native version of Android, providing out-of-the-box compatibility with the Google Play Store. This allows users to access millions of standard apps, such as YouTube and Netflix, without the need for sideloading workarounds.
A New Lineup: From Premium to Portable
The new family consists of three distinct models: the high-end Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, the entertainment-focused Alexa Tablet 11, and the portable Alexa Tablet 8. Moving away from the budget-friendly plastic frames of previous generations, these new models feature premium aluminum unibody construction, similar to the recent Kindle refresh.

Alexa Tablet 12 Pro: Display Innovation
The flagship Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is designed for both productivity and media consumption. It features a 12-inch display with a 2880x1840 resolution (280 ppi) and a 120Hz refresh rate. Users can choose between a standard vibrant display or a specialized Nanomatte option developed with Corning. Unlike traditional matte screens that scatter light unevenly, Nanomatte uses a sub-pixel level photolithography process to etch texture into the glass, preserving detail and color accuracy while significantly reducing glare.
Under the hood, the 12 Pro is powered by the 8-core MediaTek Dimensity 8400 (4nm, up to 3.25GHz), with 8GB or 16GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage. It includes quad Dolby Atmos speakers, 8MP front and 13MP rear cameras, and a USB-C port supporting DisplayPort and 5Gbps data transfers.
Mid-range and Entry-level Options
The Alexa Tablet 11 is positioned as an entertainment device, sporting an 11-inch screen (2560x1600, 90Hz) and the MediaTek 8189 chip (up to 2GHz) with 8GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB storage options. Data transfer via USB-C is limited to 480Mbps.
The most affordable option, the Alexa Tablet 8, features an 8.7-inch display (1340x800, 180 ppi) and also utilizes the MediaTek 8189 chip. It is available in 4GB/64GB and 8GB/128GB configurations.
AI Integration and Software Roadmap
Beyond the OS shift, Amazon is deeply integrating its Alexa+ AI assistant into the system. A dedicated
