Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember is a culmination of Team Ninja's experience with Nioh and Ninja Gaiden

Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember is shaping up to be more than just a sequel; it is a culmination of everything Team Ninja has learned from the Nioh, Ninja Gaiden, and Dead or Alive franchises. After five hours of gameplay, it is clear that the developers are stepping away from the grounded roots of Nioh to embrace a more fluid and vertical combat experience.

The most significant shift lies in the combat's dimensionality. While the original game stayed close to the established foundations of Nioh, Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember introduces a much-needed sense of verticality. Aerial attacks are no longer optional; they are baked into the core combat loop. This evolution is likely a result of the game being developed alongside Ninja Gaiden 4, resulting in more agile movement and a departure from the 'high gravity' feel of the first title.

The signature deflection mechanic has also been refined. While deflecting remains a core pillar, even basic enemies now possess special moves that require precise dodging or countering rather than simple blocking. The game introduces a 'critical parry' mechanic—a high-risk, high-reward maneuver that requires tighter timing but deals significantly more stamina and health damage. This raises the skill ceiling, making the learning curve steeper than in either the original Wo Long or Nioh.

Level design has moved toward a semi-open world structure, reminiscent of Nioh 3, featuring more verticality and platforming challenges. Exploration is incentivized by flags placed throughout the landscape to lead players into encounters. The weapon system also draws inspiration from Dead or Alive; with six weapon classes—including sabers, spears, staves, glaives, hammers, and flails—each possesses a unique moveset that feels as distinct as a fighting game character's repertoire.
