Sony's live service pivot leaves Guerrilla Games without a PS5 sequel
Sony faces a massive opportunity cost from its live service pivot: Guerrilla Games is reportedly not releasing a major Horizon sequel for the PS5 era, pushing the next mainline title to the PS6 lifespan.
According to Jason Schreier's reporting, Horizon Hunters Gathering has landed poorly with test audiences and is being reworked as a conventional multiplayer title without live service elements. The real issue is that Guerrilla Games, one of PlayStation's most celebrated first-party studios, has been solely focused on this struggling project since wrapping up DLC for Horizon: Forbidden West.

This means there is no mainline sequel to the franchise currently in full production at the studio. While Horizon: Forbidden West launched at the end of the PS4 cycle, its follow-up will likely not appear until well into the lifespan of the PS6.

This situation is not isolated to Guerrilla; players are noticing curious gaps in Sony's release schedule across other studios like Naughty Dog, which has had no new games since 2020. These opportunity costs arrive at a critical moment as Sony attempts to convince consumers to buy into what may be the most expensive console in its history.
