Microsoft 365: New Office Features Require Windows 11

Microsoft continues to limit the functionality of its Microsoft 365 applications on older platforms. According to official data from Hardwareluxx, as of August 2026, versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for Windows 10 will stop receiving new features.

Splitting Updates by OS Version

In Microsoft 365 version 2608, the company announced that this will be the last build with new features for users of Windows 10. The software itself will not be discontinued: users will continue to receive security updates until October 10, 2028.

However, any new capabilities that Microsoft adds to the Office ecosystem after this date will be available exclusively on Windows 11. This applies to both classic tools and new artificial intelligence features.

Impact on Copilot Features

One of the main changes will be the integration of the Copilot assistant. Features such as automatic creation of presentations in PowerPoint or summarizing text documents will either be unavailable or work with serious limitations on Windows 10.

For users who use Office exclusively for basic tasks (text editing, simple spreadsheets), the transition to a new OS is not yet critical. However, those who plan to use advanced AI capabilities or new productivity tools should consider this change when planning.

Server Situation

Similar limitations apply to server solutions as well. Support for new Microsoft 365 features on Windows Server 2022 ends in October 2026, and for Windows Server 2026 — in October 2029. Older versions of servers have already not been supported since last year.

Microsoft is effectively tying the development of office software to current versions of the operating system, which may accelerate the migration of corporate and home users to Windows 11.
