Thieves Swapped RTX 5080 GPUs for RTX 3060s in a Chinese Esports Hotel

In China, where specialized hotels catering to esports and gamers are common, an unusual theft occurred. Two criminals disguised themselves as regular guests and swapped high-performance NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 graphics cards for budget models like the RTX 3060. Their plan worked perfectly: the system continued to run stably, and staff did not notice the swap due to the similar appearance of the components.

How Thieves Deceived the Hotel

In some Asian countries, esports hotels are a standard accommodation format. They offer isolated gaming spaces with powerful PCs in rooms. Criminals targeted such facilities because they often feature expensive configurations based on RTX 5080 or RTX 5070, which are easy to sell on the secondary market.

The two criminals checked into a room posing as regular gamers. They opened the PC case, removed the expensive graphics cards, and installed two RTX 3060 models there. Since the external connectors and form factors were similar, and the system launched without errors, administrators did not deem it necessary to conduct a detailed inspection of the equipment.

The investigation led to the discovery of the crime only due to a force majeure event. On July 18, an unexpected power outage occurred at the hotel. When electricity was restored, guests requested room changes due to power issues. After moving, a technician found signs of tampering in the old case. Upon inspection, it was revealed that instead of two RTX 5080 cards, there were two budget RTX 3060 models.

Theft Scale and Motive

Police arrested the suspects two days later by checking check-in records. It turned out that criminals used this method not for the first time — they confessed to four similar cases.

The price difference between cards became the main motive. A new RTX 5080 costs around $1,400, while a used RTX 3060 is approximately $400. Thieves sold stolen cards for about $700 each, which is a very profitable deal for the secondary market.

Total damage amounted to 80,000 yuan (about $12,000). This is significantly more than the amount thieves stole in Shenzhen a month earlier ($2,000 on RAM), but comparable to a similar incident that occurred in South Korea at the beginning of the year.
