LiveHaptics mod streams PC audio to Steam Controller

A new mod called LiveHaptics allows the Steam Controller to translate real-time PC audio into haptic feedback, enabling users to feel sound through the device's vibration motors.

Developed by a user known as GooseVast6551 on Reddit and FamBoy32-dev on GitHub, the tool utilizes the Windows Audio Session API (WASAPI) loopback to capture system audio. It then converts this signal into a format compatible with the controller's haptic engine. While previous mods allowed the device to play pre-programmed sounds, this implementation processes live audio streams in real time.

The creator shared demonstration footage featuring a Madonna music video and the emulated game Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. The audio quality is limited to 16-bit/8kHz stereo, which is lower than standard speaker output. However, distinct sounds from both music and gameplay remain clearly identifiable through the vibrations.

For able-bodied users, the feature serves primarily as a novelty. However, it offers practical accessibility benefits for individuals with partial hearing. A Reddit user named ThatDeafDude noted that this type of haptic feedback enhances immersion by allowing them to feel in-game events. The user previously used the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller for similar effects but found the Steam Controller more adaptable for this specific purpose.

LiveHaptics is available for free download from GitHub. The mod requires a Steam Controller, which is currently subject to a reservation queue. It remains to be seen whether Valve will integrate similar accessibility features into future firmware updates for the device.
