Leaked DLSS 5 runs on RTX 30 series but causes severe performance drops

NVIDIA DLSS 5 Neural Rendering implementation has reportedly reached the GeForce RTX 30 series, but early tests indicate severe performance degradation on Ampere architecture GPUs.

The leaked experimental build of DLSS 5 is now running on older hardware, specifically targeting the SM86 async FP16 capabilities found in Ampere-based cards. Users have successfully activated the Neural Rendering model in titles like Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Deep Rock Galactic, and Satisfactory. However, the results are starkly different from the expected performance gains associated with frame generation technologies.

In Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, a test on an RTX 3070 Laptop showed that while the game ran at approximately 60 FPS before enabling the feature, activating DLSS 5 caused render latency to skyrocket from roughly 29 ms to 3,326 ms. The standalone Neural Rendering evaluation took around 1.2 seconds per frame. Similarly, Fluorek, who shared results on X/Twitter, reported that in Deep Rock Galactic, FPS dropped from over 130 to just 4 FPS on an RTX 3080.

Other users have encountered even more drastic issues. Reports indicate that RTX 3050 and RTX 3060 Ti cards are seeing performance drop to around 1 FPS in Control, FiveM, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. While some users managed to tweak configurations to boost an RTX 3080 Ti in Satisfactory from 1 FPS to 6 FPS, or even reach 30 FPS with additional changes, the consensus remains that the current implementation is unstable and inefficient on Ampere architecture.

This situation has sparked discussions among owners of the RTX 30 series regarding potential hardware upgrades. Some users are already considering selling their cards or replacing them with newer models like the RTX 5070 Ti. However, it is too early to draw definitive conclusions about NVIDIA's official roadmap.

NVIDIA has not yet announced which GPU generations will officially support DLSS 5. The company has only confirmed that the technology will launch this fall. By comparison, DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction officially supports every GeForce RTX generation, including the RTX 20, 30, 40, and 50 series. NVIDIA has made no equivalent statement for DLSS 5.

The current poor performance on RTX 30 cards does not necessarily dictate what NVIDIA intends to release officially. The company may limit DLSS 5 Neural Rendering to the RTX 50 series at launch, add support for the RTX 40 series later, or provide different implementations optimized for multiple architectures. This mirrors a previous situation where AMD was forced to release a special version of FSR 4 for the Radeon RX 7000 series.

It remains unclear when DLSS 5 will officially drop, but given recent comments from reviewers and an existing media embargo, an official showcase with confirmation on GPU support may arrive very soon. Until then, users should treat these results as experimental data rather than a reflection of the final product's capabilities.
