GTA VI devs avoided passing trends to create their own satire
With development cycles spanning many years, Grand Theft Auto VI faces the challenge of staying relevant. To prevent the game from feeling outdated upon launch, the Rockstar Games team is intentionally avoiding the trap of chasing fleeting internet trends.
Speaking to Love Magazine, Rupert Humphries, Senior Vice President of Narrative at Rockstar Games, noted that jumping on a six-month-long trend is a losing game for a long-term project. Instead of direct copies of real-world memes, the developers focus on creating their own "slanted, overblown versions" of contemporary phenomena, such as conspiracy theories and the public's bizarre reactions to everyday life.
The series has a long history of satirizing the American Dream. While Grand Theft Auto IV offered a commentary on the illusion of opportunity and Grand Theft Auto V leaned into overwhelming cynicism, the approach for the next installment may shift. Humphries suggested that the modern American Dream might be more modest—focused on homeownership and debt relief—yet remains increasingly out of reach for the average person.
The setting, inspired by Miami and Southern Florida, will serve as a pressure cooker where astronomical wealth clashes with unbounded ambition. This environment is designed to fuel the chaos and insanity central to the experience. While the specific motivations of protagonists Jason and Lucia remain under wraps, the thematic groundwork is already set.
