Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School arrives on PS5 on November 5
The team at Coin Crew Games has announced that Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School will be coming to PlayStation 5 on November 5. The sequel expands the first game's linear narrative into a fully explorable, open-world campus experience.
From Rooms to an Open Campus
The most significant shift in Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School is the scale of exploration. Moving away from the strictly linear progression of the first game, players will now navigate a sprawling campus designed to reward curiosity. This open-world approach introduces side quests, interactable landmarks, and secrets tucked away in the environment, making exploration as vital as the puzzles themselves.

Cooperative play remains a core feature. The developers confirmed that both couch and online co-op will be available from the start, supporting players through the main story and during the general exploration of the campus and its puzzles.
Worldbuilding and Visual Evolution
Art Director Michelle Huttunen has highlighted how the visual identity of the Academy has been elevated to feel like a living, breathing location. Key areas include:

- Headmaster’s Tower: A location inspired by classical academic aesthetics, designed to deepen the worldbuilding and the sense of the Academy's history.
- Humanities Campus: This area has seen the most significant deviation from the original 2D map layout. Following the events of the first game where Quanty burned down the library, this campus was rebuilt. It offers a cozier atmosphere, contrasting with the industrial vibes of the Science Campus or the colorful Arts Campus.
- Headmaster’s Office: The setting of the very first escape in the original Escape Academy, now serving as a visual benchmark for the game's upgraded art style.
According to Michelle Huttunen, puzzles are no longer strictly confined to individual rooms; the campus itself is designed to be part of the experience. Players will encounter landmarks they cannot reach immediately—such as a striking keyhole-shaped fountain—encouraging them to unravel the campus like a living puzzle.
Editorial Verdict
Transitioning to an open-world format is a bold move for the escape-room genre. If Coin Crew Games can maintain the density and logic of their puzzles without making the campus exploration feel aimless, Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School could set a precedent for how to evolve niche mechanics into a more immersive experience. For returning players, the chance to revisit familiar locations on a much larger scale is a compelling draw.
