Apple Unveils New iPad mini with A20 Pro Chip, OLED Display, and IP67 Rating

The updated iPad mini moves away from traditional LCD technology, adopting an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel. This shift results in a 24% reduction in bezel width compared to the previous generation, allowing for the larger screen real estate. The new display offers a peak brightness of up to 1,200 nits—more than double the brightness of its predecessor—and a high contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1. Users can also opt for a Nano-texture display version to reduce glare. The device supports Apple Pencil Pro and USB-C for stylus input.

A20 Pro Silicon and AI Performance

At the core of the iPad mini (2026) is the A20 Pro chip. This SoC features a 6-core CPU and a 7-core GPU equipped with a dedicated Neural Accelerator. According to Apple, these architectural improvements deliver up to 4.5x faster AI performance and a 2.7x increase in graphics performance compared to the previous model. Additionally, the CPU provides up to 60% faster multi-threaded performance. The device runs iPadOS 27, which integrates Apple Intelligence features, including an AI-enhanced Siri.

Design, Connectivity, and Pricing

The hardware redesign has resulted in a thinner profile, measuring just 5.4mm. The device is also rated IP67 for water and dust resistance. For connectivity, it supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and USB Type-C with 10Gbps speeds. The iPad mini is available in two colors: Midnight and Starlight, with storage capacities of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.
