8BitDo Launches Forest Wonder Retro 87 Keyboard and R8 Mouse

The collection targets users who want a distinct visual identity on their desk without sacrificing functional features. The keyboard and mouse share a cohesive design language, supporting wireless and wired connections, programmable controls, and compatibility with 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 for advanced configuration.

Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard

The Retro 87 is an 87-key mechanical keyboard co-developed with Kailh, featuring the Core Green tactile mechanical switches. The board utilizes a hot-swappable PCB, allowing users to replace switches without soldering. Keycaps are made from PBT material with dye-sublimation printing, a choice that typically offers better resistance to shine and wear over time compared to double-shot or ABS alternatives.

Lighting is handled by an RGB backlight with eight distinct modes. The keyboard includes function shortcuts and an Fn lock feature. The key profile is described as having a height similar to MDA profiles with a top-mount structure, aiming for a familiar typing experience. A notable design element is the inclusion of two large, programmable "Dual Super Buttons." These can be mapped to macros or custom functions directly on the device without software, though deeper customization is available via the 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2. The board supports N-key rollover, ensuring all simultaneous key presses are registered accurately.

Connectivity options include Bluetooth LE 5.3, 2.4 GHz wireless, and wired USB. It is equipped with a PAW 3395 sensor, a high-performance optical sensor often found in competitive gaming mice. Users can adjust tracking sensitivity across six DPI levels.

The mouse weighs 77 g and measures 115 x 58 x 39.4 mm. It features four programmable side buttons and supports left-hand and right-hand mode switching, allowing users to adapt the button layout to their preferred grip style. The primary buttons use HUANO micro switches, which are rated for up to 100 million clicks. Additional customization, including button mapping and polling rate adjustments, is available through the 8BitDo Ultimate Software for PC.

The battery is a 450 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion cell. In Bluetooth mode, it lasts up to 100 hours. In 2.4 GHz mode, battery life ranges from 26 to 105 hours depending on the selected polling rate. A full charge takes approximately 2.5 hours.

Charging Dock and Accessories

The Retro R8 includes a multi-function charging dock. Beyond charging the mouse, the dock extends the 2.4 GHz signal range to maintain a stable wireless connection and provides storage for the wireless adapter. The dock measures 115.17 x 58 x 45.88 mm and weighs 192 g.
