Xbox prioritises efficiency and affordability for next-gen console amid rising costs

Xbox is shifting its strategic priorities for the upcoming next-generation console, codenamed Project Helix. Amidst rising global hardware costs and rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, Xbox boss Asha Sharma has announced that the company will prioritize "efficiency and affordability alongside performance." This marks a significant pivot from previous generations, where raw power was the sole focus. The new console aims to offer players more choice in how they play and purchase games, addressing a current crisis in hardware components while ensuring long-term sustainability for the platform.

Speaking to the BBC, Asha Sharma emphasized that the entire industry must innovate on affordability and efficiency. "That is something that we have not had to do [previously]," she noted. The current crisis in hardware supply chains has forced a reevaluation of how consoles are built and sold. For Project Helix, this means rigorous consideration of hardware efficiency, including storage usage, memory management, unit pricing, and component selection. The goal is to build the best possible experience for players while acknowledging what is happening in the wider world.

The discussion also touched upon the controversial topic of artificial intelligence. As a former president of CoreAI at Microsoft, Sharma stated that the platform will "take into consideration what's happening in the world and build the best experience for our players." However, she reiterated Xbox's firm stance against low-quality AI integration. The company has "no tolerance for bad AI" and refuses to chase short-term efficiency or flood its ecosystem with "soulless AI slop." Sharma declared that games are and always will be art crafted by humans, created with innovative technology provided by Microsoft.

Crucially, Sharma and Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty confirmed that the platform faces "no pressure from Microsoft" to use AI. Their teams are free to utilize any technologies that might be beneficial, such as tools for writing code or checking for bugs in the production pipeline. As Booty explained, "At the end of the day... we're committed to art made by people. Technology is only in support of that." This ensures that human creativity remains at the heart of game development.

Sharma also addressed the ongoing restructuring within Xbox, which included laying off 3,200 employees—representing 20% of the Xbox organization—and divesting five internal studios. She explained that these difficult decisions were implemented "to ensure we are here for the next 25 years and we're continuing to serve our purpose." The company acknowledged it had not been healthy during the transition to a new generation of players who want to play in different ways using new technology.

Regarding the physical media, Sharma declined to comment on whether Project Helix will include a disc drive. However, she highlighted Xbox's commitment to player choice. She acknowledged that while players love physical media, there are significant benefits to digital media as well. "We've long pioneered backwards compatibility, and so you'll continue to see that as we go forward in the generations," she said. Additionally, Xbox is rolling out a new feature allowing Insiders to convert physical game discs into digital entitlements later this month, further expanding consumer options.

Sharma's vision for Project Helix balances high performance with practical considerations like cost and efficiency. By focusing on these three pillars alongside the inevitable integration of AI tools, Xbox aims to create a sustainable future for gaming that respects both the creators and the players who have supported the platform for decades.
