World of Warcraft: Forever — What’s New and What Feels Familiar

Blizzard has shared a closer look at World of Warcraft: Forever. Rather than a traditional expansion, this mode offers a fresh way to experience Azeroth, catering to players who prefer the classic leveling experience while maintaining a link to the modern game.

The core focus of World of Warcraft: Forever is providing a dedicated setting for exploring the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor up to level 60. By capping the level at 60, Blizzard aims to create a stable foundation that allows for future content expansions without the need to increase the level cap.

A standout feature is the new Legacy System, which introduces account-wide progression. Through Legacy Points, players can earn character-specific perks and cosmetic rewards. Each character can spend up to 16 points across three categories: Professions, Adventure, and Resourcefulness, allowing for meaningful progression on a single main character or across multiple alts.

New content includes nine five-player dungeons spanning levels 13 to 60. Additionally, players can experience the world through the new Skyborne race. Depending on their faction, players can choose between the Horde-aligned Windshaper Skyborne or the Alliance-aligned High Order Skyborne, featuring a unique introductory experience on Zephras Isle.

Classes and Controls

While class names remain familiar, their combat rhythms and toolkits have been updated to reflect the game's specific identity. For instance, Hunters will feature more tactical trap usage and gear-scaled pet abilities. The game also introduces new race-and-class combinations, such as Undead Paladins, Dwarf Shamans, Gnome Priests, Human Hunters, Orc Mages, and Troll Warlocks.

On the technical side, Blizzard is testing gamepad support in beta, allowing players to navigate menus, select targets, and collect loot with a controller, though a keyboard is still required for chat. Interface options include two presets: Classic, which uses standard-definition models and traditional layouts, and Enhanced, which offers high-definition visuals and modern conveniences like quest guidance and a unified bag view.

Crucially, World of Warcraft: Forever is designed to coexist with the modern game. A single World of Warcraft subscription provides access to both, allowing players to switch between the two experiences seamlessly.
