Azeroth Reimagined: Everything We Know About World of Warcraft: Forever

Blizzard Entertainment has pulled back the curtain on its ambitious new project, World of Warcraft: Forever. This is not merely a seasonal mode or a temporary event, but a full-scale, evolving version of the original Azeroth, set within a "time bubble" before the reopening of the Dark Portal. The development team is operating under the philosophy of "found photographs"—uncovering story threads and mysteries that feel as though they have always been part of the Classic experience, filling in the gaps of Warcraft lore without disrupting its foundational history.

A Living World: New Lands and Expanded Horizons

Rather than rushing into new expansions, the team is focusing on deepening the existing world. A major highlight is Riverglades, a mid-level zone (levels 30–40) roughly the size of Stranglethorn Vale. It will connect Burning Steppes, Redridge Mountains, Swamp of Sorrows, and Badlands, offering over 150 new quests. Access to this frontier will be facilitated by new maritime routes, such as the one from Powderfuse Port via the Steamwheedle Cartel in Tanaris.

Other significant additions include:

  • Mount Hyjal: An exploration of the aftermath of the Battle for Mount Hyjal and the recovery of its lands.
  • Shen’dralas: A new area south of Desolace, exploring the history of Eldre’Thalas and the tensions between centaur tribes and other factions.
  • Zephras Isle: An "unexpected" addition featuring a floating island in crisis, where players encounter the Skyborne and their elemental struggles.

To facilitate travel, Blizzard is introducing new shipping routes, such as the path from Stormwind Harbor to Auberdine, bridging the gap between the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor for easier leveling and social interaction.

New Races and Class Dynamics

One of the most striking reveals is the new playable race: the Skyborne (also known as shen’dorei). This race features faction-specific class unlocks: Horde-aligned Skyborne gain access to the Shaman class, while Alliance-aligned Skyborne can choose the Mage class. All Skyborne players can still play standard classes like Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, or Druid, with specialized druid forms designed specifically for the race.

The announcement also confirmed the arrival of Forsaken Paladins. Their narrative, tied to the Forsaken Kingdom campaign from Warcraft III, begins in the Tirisfal Glades. Upon reaching level 60, Forsaken Paladins will embark on a unique mount quest for Retribution, contrasting with the Alliance's Redemption path.

Systems: Camping, Professions, and Legacy

Blizzard is emphasizing serendipitous social encounters through the Camping system. Players can create Basic Campfires, which serve as social hubs where adventurers can rest, repair gear, and gain buffs. Professions are deeply integrated into this system: Blacksmiths can provide an Attack Power buff via a Sharpening Wheel, while Herbalists can offer Intellect boosts through Incense Candles. The game will feature over 600 new profession recipes to support this depth.

To reward players who enjoy the journey of leveling multiple characters, the Legacy system has been introduced. By completing various challenges, players earn Legacy Points that can be spent in specialized trees: Adventure, Professions, and Resourcefulness. While points are shared across all an alt's characters, they must be spent individually on each hero, allowing for both specialized builds and broad progression.

The game is also moving toward a realmless structure. Instead of choosing a specific server at character creation, players will select a ruleset: Normal (cooperative-focused with consensual PvP) or PvP (high-stakes combat in contested territories).

Dungeons, Raids, and PvP Content

The world will be populated by nine new dungeons, including Hall of Thanes under Ironforge and the Ruins of Lordaeron. High-end content will feature raids such as Hyjal Summit (20-player) and Barrow Deeps (10-player). For PvP enthusiasts, the Darkspear Islands will introduce a 15 vs 15 Battleground featuring strategic point control and flag captures.

Verdict: World of Warcraft: Forever appears to be Blizzard's definitive answer to the community's desire for a living, breathing, and perpetually expanding Classic Azeroth. By focusing on the
