Windows-like Task Manager arrives for macOS via former Microsoft engineer
Dave Plummer, who originally wrote the Windows Task Manager, is now developing a similar utility for macOS. The new tool, built in Swift, addresses limitations of Apple's native Activity Monitor by adding per-core CPU monitoring and advanced process management features.
While the standard Activity Monitor provides basic metrics like CPU usage and memory consumption, Plummer's new version includes service management, startup app configuration, and comprehensive GPU utilization graphs. Although Microsoft graciously provided the source code for the XP Task Manager to demonstrate on YouTube, this new project is developed independently from scratch.
The tool currently samples system data at a rate of 60Hz, but Plummer considers reducing this frequency to 30 or 15Hz to improve stability, potentially sacrificing some real-time detail. The primary obstacle to official distribution is Apple's App Store policy: sandboxed applications are prohibited from terminating other processes, which is a core function of a Task Manager.
Plummer intends to distribute the beta version for free outside the App Store but remains open to releasing the source code if he loses interest in maintaining it. While development continues, the project's future depends on navigating Apple's strict software distribution guidelines.
