Windows 11: Microsoft to Modernize Legacy Dialogs via WinUI 3
Microsoft is continuing its mission to modernize the Windows 11 user interface. As confirmed by March Rogers, Partner Director of Design at Microsoft, the company is systematically working through a list of legacy UI elements that still reflect the design language of older operating systems.
Two Approaches to UI Modernization
To bring the system into visual alignment, Microsoft is employing two distinct strategies. Some legacy dialogs will simply receive dark mode support, while others will be completely rebuilt using the WinUI 3 framework. This modern framework allows developers to implement the rounded corners and contemporary aesthetics central to the Windows 11 design language. The decision to fully rewrite a component versus simply updating its theme depends on the development effort required and the potential risks to system stability.
Key Interface Changes
The updated Run dialog is one of the most notable upcoming changes. Rebuilt with C# and WinUI 3, the new version will feature dark mode support, a redesigned command history, and the ability to open the user directory using the tilde (~) character. To ensure a smooth transition, Microsoft plans to make the new dialog optional during its initial rollout, allowing users to switch between the classic and modern versions.
Other planned updates include:
- AutoPlay settings for removable media;
- Language pack management dialogs;
- The PC Reset interface;
- Print management windows.
