Samsung Galaxy Watch 9: A Massive Performance Leap via Snapdragon

The ninth generation of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 introduces a fundamental shift: the company has moved away from its proprietary SiP in favor of Qualcomm silicon. The transition to the Snapdragon Wear Elite platform has delivered a substantial performance jump, but not every aspect of the wearable has seen such a significant upgrade. We dive into whether this speed boost translates to better daily use and how the health tracking accuracy holds up.

A New Heart: The Snapdragon Transition

The most significant technical change in the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 is the architecture. By replacing the previous Exynos chips with the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear Elite (SW6100), Samsung has achieved a massive performance leap. Benchmarks show up to a 65% increase in performance over the Watch 8, with synthetic tests outperforming even the Apple Watch 11 in raw computational tasks.

In daily operation, this translates to a much smoother experience under One UI 9 and Wear OS 7. While the 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage ensure fluid navigation, occasional minor stutters are still perceptible, though the overall responsiveness is a major step up.

Display and Build Quality

The display is a standout feature. The 1.5-inch Super AMOLED panel, protected by sapphire crystal, reaches an impressive peak brightness of over 3,000 cd/m² when the ambient light sensor is active. This ensures excellent readability even in direct sunlight. However, users should note that the panel utilizes 60 Hz PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation) for dimming, which may cause eye strain for those sensitive to screen flickering.

In terms of design, Samsung maintains its signature rounded aluminum case. The watch feels premium and lightweight, backed by IP68, 5ATM, and MIL-STD-810H ratings, making it durable enough for swimming and various outdoor activities.

Health Tracking and Ecosystem Barriers

The BioActive sensor suite provides highly accurate data. In our testing, measurements for heart rate, SpO2, and blood pressure showed minimal deviation from medical-grade reference devices. However, a persistent frustration remains: key features like ECG and blood pressure monitoring are still restricted to users with Samsung smartphones via the Samsung Health Monitor app.

Sleep tracking has become more sophisticated with the introduction of Galaxy AI, which analyzes vital signs to provide personalized wellness insights. Additionally, the new Fitness Index helps users track training progress by analyzing VO2max and daily activity levels.

Battery Life: No Major Gains

Despite software optimizations, battery life is not a highlight. While Samsung claims a 20% increase in capacity, this applies only to the smaller 40 mm model. Our 44 mm test unit (445 mAh) showed no significant improvement over the Watch 8. With Always-On Display and sleep tracking enabled, users will likely need to charge the device daily. Furthermore, charging speeds remain relatively slow, requiring approximately 1.5 hours for a full charge.
