Wildcard fall to HOTU in opening match of Thunderpick World Championship qualifier
Wildcard suffered a swift 0-2 defeat against HOTU in the opening match of the Thunderpick World Championship 2026 Closed Qualifier, dropping them into the lower bracket immediately.
The series began on Mirage, where HOTU seized early momentum with a seven-round streak. Despite Wildcard managing to score some rounds and recover from losing both pistol rounds, they could not overcome the deficit. HOTU closed out the first map 13-7 after dominating the second half.
HOTU then selected Cache, winning their third pistol round to start on the Terrorist side. Although several rounds came down to clutch plays, HOTU maintained control throughout the first half to win nine rounds in total. After securing their fourth pistol and conversions, Wildcard could only delay the inevitable for two rounds before HOTU sealed the victory 13-5.
Dmitry 'mizu' Kondratev led the way for HOTU with 20 kills and a 1.48 rating, while Kim 'frontales' Argunov contributed 36 kills and a 1.42 rating. For Wildcard, Danny 'Cxzi' Strzelczyk recorded the most kills with 25, but Ethan 'reck' Serrano struggled significantly with just 14 kills and a low KAST of 47.4%.
With this loss, Wildcard will face EYEBALLERS tomorrow at 11:00 AM to stay alive in the qualifier. Only the winner of this 16-team tournament will earn a spot in the main Thunderpick World Championship event.
