Valve fixes one of Steam Frame’s most annoying issue: slow charging
Valve has released the SteamOS 0.3.0 update for the Steam Frame headset. A primary focus of this release is addressing a recurring complaint from early reviews: slow charging speeds.
Slow charging was a significant pain point due to the headset's relatively limited battery life during local gameplay. Ars Technica measured approximately 1.5 hours of playtime in Performance mode, while other tests indicated charging times approaching three hours. Users frequently cited this as one of the device's major drawbacks.
Substantial Power Increase
The official changelog states that the headset now supports "substantially faster charging" when powered off or in sleep mode. Technical testing suggests the improvement is even more significant than the brief description implies.
According to tests by The Verge, a depleted Steam Frame previously started charging at around 8W and peaked at 27W. Following the SteamOS 0.3.0 update, the device reportedly starts charging at 19–21W and can reach a peak of 42W.
Additional Improvements in SteamOS 0.3.0
Beyond power management, the 0.3.0 update includes several other refinements:
- Improved Motion Smoothing for enhanced visual fluidity.
- Fixes for microphone-related issues.
