Updated Xbox PC app promises 60% faster loading and easier access to games
Microsoft is attempting to improve the user experience of its Xbox PC app, addressing long-standing performance concerns with a series of updates focused on speed and navigation. While the improvements aim to make the platform more responsive, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma noted that the company still has a significant amount of work ahead to reach its goals.
Starting today, members of the Xbox Insiders program can test the latest version of the Xbox PC app. Microsoft claims the update delivers substantial performance gains: the app now boots up 60% faster, specific pages launch up to 50% faster, and in-app windows open up to 65% faster. However, the company cautioned that these performance metrics can vary depending on individual hardware setups, internet connections, and specific devices.
Beyond raw speed, the update focuses on usability and aesthetics. According to Xbox Wire, the revamped app features simpler navigation, updated filters, and new ways to organize game libraries. Social features have also been integrated directly into the main navigation menu, intended to allow users to jump into games or chat with friends more quickly. Additionally, the interface has received refreshed game cards and new animations to provide a cleaner look and feel, alongside the introduction of light and dark modes.
Despite these upgrades, the platform still faces a steep climb to match the feature set of established competitors like Steam. While CEO Asha Sharma described the update as a "meaningful improvement," she acknowledged that there is "plenty more to do" to perfect the experience. The company is also expanding its cloud gaming reach, rolling out a revamped setup to more web browser users, supported smart TVs, and VR headsets.
This update follows Microsoft's recent efforts to bolster its PC presence, which included bringing a selection of classic titles—such as Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy—to PC for the first time earlier this year. The company also recently introduced Mythic Achievements, a system equivalent to PlayStation's Platinum Trophies, for all Xbox players.
