Googlebooks Update: System Patch to Free Up to 6 GB of RAM

Following a rocky launch, Google is rolling out its November update for the new Googlebooks lineup. The patch focuses on addressing performance complaints regarding high system load by optimizing memory management, fixing Bluetooth audio latency, and improving the stability of the Linux Terminal beta.

The November update, released as build CL3B.260622.286.R2, arrives as a follow-up to several incremental patches released in October. In addition to the performance and stability fixes, the update includes the Android security patch dated November 1, 2026, for all Googlebooks models.

More RAM for Chrome via NPU Optimization

One of the most significant changes involves how the operating system handles local AI services. Google has optimized the NPU (Neural Processing Unit) driver, which allows the system to reclaim more physical memory when Chrome requires it for smooth operation. This optimization is designed to improve multitasking performance by reducing the overall memory footprint of background AI tasks.

According to Google, the impact of this change varies by hardware configuration. On devices like the Acer Googlebook 14, Asus Googlebook 14, and Lenovo Googlebook 15 equipped with 16 GB of RAM, the update is expected to reduce memory usage by up to approximately 6 GB. Generally, users can expect between 3 and 6 GB of additional RAM to be freed up depending on the specific model.

Bluetooth and Display Fixes

The update also addresses several user-reported issues regarding peripherals and media playback. For the HP Googlebook 14 and Dell XPS Googlebook 13, Google has revised how the OS handles Bluetooth audio routing. This fix aims to eliminate the audio-video desync experienced when using wireless headphones during video playback. Additionally, compatible Bluetooth headsets can now be explicitly selected as audio output devices, resolving a bug where calls and audio were incorrectly routed to the laptop's built-in speakers.

Display-related fixes include a resolution for a bug where the taskbar and desktop icons would disappear after disconnecting multiple external displays. Furthermore, a specific issue with Netflix has been corrected, where audio would continue to play even if the external monitor displayed a black screen.

Robustness for the Linux Terminal Beta

The Linux Terminal beta receives several stability improvements. Active shell sessions should now remain connected when the Googlebook wakes from sleep or when switching between tabs. Google has also addressed a bug that caused interruptions in SSH connections and other forwarded ports.

Other technical refinements for the Linux environment include:
