Unity unveils Unity Spark: a web-based AI platform for game creation

Unity has introduced Unity Spark, a browser-based generative AI platform designed to enable users to design and iterate on 3D games using natural language prompts. The tool is scheduled to launch in beta later this year on Google Playground.

Running on the Unity engine, Unity Spark is entirely web-based and requires no software installation. The platform is intended for users aged 18 and older. While announced as a strategic partnership with Google, the company clarified that the tool will utilize a variety of generative AI models rather than being exclusively tied to Google's technology.

According to Unity CEO Matt Bromberg, the platform is not intended for "one-shotting"—generating a complete game from a single prompt. Instead, it aims to help users build something worth polishing and sharing. In a technical demonstration, AI agents were shown responding to text prompts by suggesting items from the Unity Asset Store, such as capes for characters, or generating environmental backgrounds like sunrises. The system can also suggest functional tools, such as lighting preset toggles, and allows multiple agents to work simultaneously.

The platform features deep integration with the Unity Asset Store, allowing users to incorporate high-quality, community-created assets into their projects via AI suggestions. Unity Spark also supports collaborative creation, where users can share links to work on the same project at the same time. While the editor is restricted to desktop browsers, the resulting games will be playable on both desktop and mobile browsers.

At launch, several limitations will be in place:

  • projects cannot be downloaded or exported to the full desktop version of the Unity engine;
  • selling projects created within Unity Spark will not be permitted;
  • access will follow a credit-based system tied to AI tokens, with a limited amount of free credits available.

Matt Bromberg emphasized that the mission of Unity Spark is to democratize game creation. He noted that while approximately 3 billion people play games made with Unity every month, very few have ever attempted to create one. The tool is aimed at gamers, modders, and artists who lack coding skills but possess creative conviction.

This move follows a series of AI-related developments at Unity, including the recent open beta of tools like 'Plan' mode and 'Skills' for UI guidance. AI tools are expected to be a core component of the upcoming Unity 7, scheduled for release in Q1 2027, though the company has stated that using AI remains optional for developers.
