"This was not a Creative Assembly developed game": Total War boss points to external partner for Shogun 2 Complete Edition issues

Following the removal of Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition from Steam by Sega and Creative Assembly due to technical flaws and AI-generated art, the franchise's leadership has stepped in. Total War vice president Roger Collum issued a personal apology, addressing the community's disappointment and clarifying how the project was handled.

The backlash centered on the remaster's technical state and the presence of AI-generated assets. Collum explained that the Complete Edition was not a direct Creative Assembly development. He admitted that the studio "took their eyes off" the external production process to focus on other major projects, meaning the game did not undergo the same internal quality assurance (QA) and review standards as primary titles. While the specific partner was not named in the statement, Mataboo Games is listed as a co-developer on the Steam page.

Despite the attempt to distance the studio from the direct development, Collum emphasized that Total War remains their franchise and the responsibility rests with them. Currently, Sega and a small team of senior developers are working with the external partner on "next steps," with more details expected soon.

The discussion also touched upon the studio's policy regarding generative AI. Collum stated that Creative Assembly does not use AI to create game assets or art and mandates that all external developers follow the same rule. However, the studio does utilize AI tools for supportive tasks such as analysis, debugging, and rapid prototyping to assist their human experts.

As of now, the Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition page remains on Steam with "overwhelmingly negative" reviews, though the original game has been reinstated while the developers work to fix the remaster.
