The Sims 4: How to Configure AutoSave, Save Reminders, and Backups
The July 21, 2026 update for The Sims 4 added AutoSave and Save Reminders on PC, Mac, and consoles. They reduce the risk of lost progress but do not replace independent backups. This guide configures them without assuming an automatic save can repair a damaged file.
Check the Build and Start Clean
The features require PC 1.126.58.1030, Mac 1.126.58.1230, or console 2.36. If the settings are missing, close the game completely, install the platform update, and relaunch. The build number matters more than download date because an automatic update may have been deferred.
Before the first post-patch launch, temporarily remove mods that alter the interface, appearance, or cached data. Create a test save and verify normal loading, travel between lots, and return to the main menu. Restore only current versions of modifications.
Find AutoSave and Save Reminders
Open Game Options and then Game Save Settings. AutoSave and manual save reminders are configured separately. Do not enable every interruption without thought; choose a reminder interval that fits long building sessions or household play.
AutoSave writes after supported events, including travel, playtime, and selected progression milestones. It is not a continuous record of every action. Continue using manual Save or Save As after a major build, household edit, or lengthy story sequence.
Combine AutoSave With Rotating Manual Slots
Keep AutoSave enabled as a recovery point and rotate two or three manual files. Use one before a major lot change, another after verification, and a third as an older stable copy. Save As prevents every decision from overwriting the only known working state.
If the game becomes unstable, do not continue saving across every slot. Exit without writing, remove recently installed mods, and test an older copy. Repeatedly overwriting a damaged state reduces the number of useful recovery points.
An External Copy Still Matters
On PC and Mac, copy the Sims 4 save folder to a separate location while the game is closed. On consoles, use the platform's cloud synchronization, but do not treat synchronization as an archive: the newest damaged version may be copied to another device.
Create a backup before a major patch, a large mod installation, or a computer transfer. Put the date in the folder name so a stable state can be distinguished from a recent one. Never edit the game's save files while the client is running.
What Memory Boost Actually Does
Memory Boost is now enabled across supported platforms and its toggle has been removed. It works with larger data blocks and is intended to improve longer, older, and larger saves. It is a memory-management system, not a repair utility.
EA says one corrupted-lot problem in saves containing many Residential Rentals could no longer be reproduced with the new configuration. That is not a universal guarantee; outcomes still depend on world size, hardware, and third-party content.
When a Save Already Fails
Copy the current files first, even if they appear damaged. Then test an older manual slot or a recoverable version exposed by the load menu. Run the copy without mods and do not overwrite the original until several lots load successfully.
If a clean game still fails, record the client build, platform, and exact action before the error and contact EA Help. AutoSave protects against accidental lost time, reminders encourage manual saves, and real resilience comes from multiple independent copies.
