Steam's New Wishlist: How Categories Change Discovery and Gifting
Valve updated Steam wishlists on July 22, 2026. Custom categories, filters, per-category notification settings, and new gifting paths address a problem common to older accounts: a wishlist stops helping with the next purchase when it becomes another archive.
Categories Map Intent Instead of Rank
Games can be assigned to custom categories such as “buy on sale,” “co-op,” “short games,” or “wait for full release.” Frequent categories are surfaced more quickly, while search and autocomplete reduce the work of maintaining a large catalog.
The change is more than visual. Sorting ranks one stream, while categories record why an item matters. A player can separate genuine plans from projects followed out of curiosity instead of forcing unrelated purchases into one comparison.
Notifications Become Selective
Notification behavior can be configured for each category. Sale alerts can stay active for purchase-ready games and remain off for a distant archive. Demos are also highlighted more clearly and can participate in notifications.
That control reduces noise but requires an initial cleanup. If hundreds of entries are divided without stable rules, categories simply recreate the old disorder. Starting with three or four durable groups is more effective than designing a complex taxonomy.
Small Interface Changes Restore Context
The revised interface better preserves navigation position, includes microtrailers, and improves contrast. Those details matter little in a short list, but returning to the same place saves substantial time when hundreds of games are involved.
Microtrailers accelerate first-pass review but do not replace a product page. A short clip rarely explains monetization, system requirements, or Early Access condition. The wishlist narrows a choice; the final decision still requires current product information.
A Category Can Become a Public Collection
Steam can create a shareable link for a specific category. A recipient may view it even when the full wishlist is private, and the owner can revoke the link instead of permanently exposing all interests.
The feature extends beyond gifts. A category can act as a short recommendation set or a group's co-op shortlist. Access by link should still be treated as publication of that profile segment, so sensitive notes or unwanted titles do not belong there.
A Gift No Longer Always Requires Steam Friendship
Guest checkout can send a game directly to an email address. If the gift is not accepted within 30 days, the purchase is automatically refunded. For email delivery, the recipient must live in the same country as the purchaser.
Cross-region gifting to a Steam friend may now adjust the price during checkout. That does not eliminate regional restrictions or guarantee every title is available; the final amount, recipient country, and store message need to be reviewed before payment.
Why Developers Should Care
Categories give players a way to preserve interest between an announcement and the right buying moment. That may extend the useful life of a wishlist addition, but it also makes intent more honest: a game placed in a distant archive is not equivalent to an imminent sale.
Selective alerts may reduce incidental impressions while making chosen notifications more relevant. This is an inference, not a metric published by Valve; the company has not reported how the redesign changes conversion. Studio data and later store adjustments will provide better evidence.
A Practical Cleanup Routine
Create action categories rather than genre categories: “buy now,” “wait for sale,” “check after release,” and “play together.” Remove projects that no longer hold interest, then enable alerts only for the first two groups.
Share one short category with friends and test its link in a private window. The redesign does not need to produce more purchases; its real value is making the boundary between observation and intention visible. Sources: Steam News announcement from July 22, 2026; Steam Support.
