ShiftUp has confirmed that Stellar Blade will rely on frame generation to maintain a 60fps target on Nintendo Switch 2. The studio’s CTO and technical director, DongKi Lee, explained the technical approach in an interview with NintendoEverything, detailing how the team balanced performance and latency for the handheld hybrid.

The game, which launched as a PlayStation 5 exclusive in 2024 and later arrived on PC, is officially scheduled to reach Switch 2 before the end of 2026. To achieve the desired frame rate on the new hardware, ShiftUp implemented a hybrid rendering pipeline. The team uses DLSS for upscaling in both handheld and docked modes, targeting an output resolution of 720p and 1080p respectively. The internal native resolution prior to upscaling remains undisclosed.

The most significant technical detail involves the use of AMD FSR 3.1 specifically for its frame interpolation feature. DongKi Lee stated that the team took the result from the DLSS upscaling pass and applied FSR 3.1 frame interpolation to reach the 60fps target. This approach is designed to ensure consistent performance across both modes of operation.

Frame generation often raises concerns regarding input latency. To address this, ShiftUp prioritized even latency for players. The base frame rate is maintained at 30fps, with interpolation used to double the perceived frame rate. While this method is preferable to inconsistent frame rates seen in other ports, it remains a point of discussion among players who prefer native rendering without interpolation.
